Roofing in Paradise, CA

Paradise has two kinds of houses now: the ones built since the Camp Fire, with Class A roofs, ember-resistant vents and gutter guards already on them, and the ones that came through it, with the roofs they had in 2018. The town requires every new, repaired or replaced roof to be Class A, and more than half a roof replaced in a year means all of it. We build to that, and to the town's 30 pounds per square foot snow load.

The permit comes from the Town of Paradise at the Building Resiliency Center on Skyway, and the inspector checks the roof-to-deck fire stopping, the vents, the gutter guards and the skylight mesh along with the roof itself. We pull it and meet the inspection.

Paradise roofing questions

Yes. The Town of Paradise requires Class A on every new structure and on any roofing applied in a repair or replacement, and if more than half the roof is replaced in a year the whole roof has to be Class A. Composition shingle, metal and tile all qualify; wood shake does not.

The vents, which have to be ember-resistant; the gaps between the roof covering and the deck, which have to be fire-stopped; gutter guards; and a mesh over skylights. We include all of it in the bid.

The town designs roofs for a 30 pounds per square foot snow load. That affects framing more than covering, but it is one reason metal is a popular choice on the Ridge.
